LEGISLATION AND EXECUTIVE ORDERS

U.S. policies that prioritize and govern AI are defined through a combination of Congressional legislation, Executive Orders, and Office of Management and Budget (OMB) guidance to agencies. These policy documents collectively identify the purposes of the National AI Initiative, the activities of the Initiative, the organizations or committees that are responsible for fulfilling the purposes of the Initiative, the approaches that govern the Initiative, and related topics. Agencies collaborate across the Federal government to execute these AI policy priorities, in cooperation with academia, industry, non-profits, and civil society organizations.

STRATEGY DOCUMENTS

The National AI Initiative is guided by strategic documents at both the national and department/agency levels. National-level strategies provide guidance to the Federal agencies as a whole, and include plans for Federal investments in AI research and development, as well as for Federal engagement in AI technical standards. The strategic plans of departments and agencies describe how each Federal agency will pursue the national strategic goals in light of the individual missions, capabilities, authorities, and budgets of each department or agency. Together, these documents provide a strategic framework across the entire Federal government to ensure continued U.S. leadership in AI.
